 Locum Tenens: The Temporary Physician

Locum tenens.

The phrase translates as 'one holding a place.' But in practical terms it means 'temporary physician.'

Locum tenens is a great opportunity for physicians to experience different practice settings, earn an additional income, or set up a far-ranging practice without business and paperwork hassles. More than 30,000 physicians in all specialties practice on a temporary basis—some traveling full time, most spending a year or two, or just part of their vacation time, as a locum tenens. In fact, many physicians just out of residency or fellowship use locum tenens to explore different locations and settings to help them make more of an educated decision when considering a permanent position.
