Who We Are

Welcome to NewPhysician, an online resource of career-related information for medical students, medical residents and recently trained physicians.

NewPhysician is provided and maintained by AMN Healthcare, the nation's largest healthcare staffing firm, which includes both Merritt Hawkins® and Staff Care®.

Merritt Hawkins is the leading physician search and consulting firm in the United States. Founded in 1987, Merritt Hawkins recruits physicians and advanced allied professionals seeking permanent, full-time practice opportunities for hospitals, medical groups and other healthcare providers in all 50 states. In 2005 Merritt Hawkins and its affiliates were acquired by AMN Healthcare to create the largest healthcare staffing firm in the nation.

Merritt Hawkins physician recruiters conduct more than 2,600 permanent physician searches each year and have placed thousands of physicians in all specialties throughout the country. Continually cited by publications ranging from The Wall Street Journal to American Medical News, Merritt Hawkins is the most visible and respected name in physician recruiting today.

Staff Care is the nation's leader in temporary (locum tenens) physician staffing. Staff Care currently works with thousands of physicians and other clinical providers who provide care on a locum tenens basis in communities from coast to coast. Noted for its superior service to both physicians and clients, Staff Care is the sponsor of the Country Doctor of the Year Award. This national honor recognizing the contributions of America's rural practitioners has been featured in countless media outlets, including Parade, People Magazine, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and The Today Show.

Our Mission

NewPhysician was created to help medical students, residents and new doctors find the information they need to make informed, positive choices in their medical careers. While physicians focus on acquiring a vast amount of clinical knowledge, often they are not instructed in basic career-related principles and concepts, such as:

What are the elements of a contract? What is competitive compensation in my specialty? What is an income guarantee? What should I ask in an interview? How can I determine which opportunity is right for me?

During the last 24 years, we have consulted with hundreds of residents and new physicians regarding all the decisions and data required to evaluate both permanent and locum tenens practice opportunities. NewPhysician puts much of this data and expertise at your fingertips. You will find information on this site that will allow you to better understand the process of evaluating and selecting the practice opportunity that is right for you.

In addition to the information found on this site, you also have direct access to our physician recruiters and consultants by emailing expert@newphysician.com. If you do not find the information you are looking for on this site, or if you wish to contact a consultant on any career related matter, please submit your question and we will address it.

NewPhysician also includes descriptions of both permanent and locum tenens practice opportunities currently available through Merritt Hawkins and Staff Care. We encourage those residents or newly trained physicians seeking practice opportunities to review these opportunities and to contact us for further information.

Thank you for your visit. We wish you the best of luck in finding a practice opportunity that meets your professional and personal needs.

Speaking Presentations

Consultants with both Merritt Hawkins and Staff Care regularly speak before medical residency programs throughout the country. Topics covered include most of the information found on this site, with a focus on how to evaluate medical practice opportunities.
